Become a Diving Professional

padi diver entering from boat

The PADI Divemaster course brings you to the first professional level in scuba diving. In your Divemaster training or Divemaster internship you will learn what it is like to work in a diving center.

You will get involved in the daily life of the dive center, dive local dives sites and assist PADI Instructors with dive courses. During the PADI Divemaster course, you will learn about diving theory, you will learn how to organize dives with customers and you will do training exercises that stretch your ability to avoid and solve problems.

You will put this all into action by working together with the diving staff on the daily dive trips and dive courses. Divemaster training develops your leadership abilities, qualifying you to supervise dive activities and work together with Instructors who are teaching student divers.

What does a Divemaster do?

So what jobs can you expect to do as a qualified PADI Divemaster? There’s a lot!

Guiding

Main duties as Divemaster will be to supervise and guide certified divers. This is actually much more than swimming around and pointing at fish!! In your Divemaster course you will learn all it takes to assure that your customers have an enjoyable diving experience; organizing equipment, choosing your dive site and planning your dive, anticipating and avoiding potential problems, etc.

Assisting with courses

As a qualified PADI Divemaster you can also assist Instructors in conducting dive courses of all levels. This can be a very useful and rewarding job. You can assist your Instructor by helping students to overcome learning difficulties and supervising students (that are taking their first breaths under water) when they are not under the immediate Instructors attention. Being a PADI Divemaster allows you to apply to become a DSD Leader. A DSD Leader can take ‘Discover Scuba Diving’ participants in the pool or confined water, after a brief explanation of the basic diving knowledge. This allows you to take people in shallow water, let them practice their first breaths with scuba equipment and teach them the first basic diving skills like regulator clearing and mask clearing.

Teaching

There are also some PADI courses that you can teach as a Divemaster. For instance, a PADI Divemaster is allowed to teach all (AWARE) courses without dives. After completing the appropriate Specialty Instructor course a PADI Divemaster is also allowed to teach the Digital Underwater Photography course. If a diver has not been active for a long time and wants to do the PADI Reactivate Program, that can also be taught by a PADI Divemaster.
