PADI Dive Theory

An important part of the PADI IDC is the dive theory. Having a solid theoretical background makes sure you that you come across as a trustworthy and confident instructor. It also helps you to avoid problems and to find a solution if problems occur.

All Asia Scuba Instructor IDC candidates have access to our unique online learning site to prepare for the PADI Instructor exam. If you choose to do your PADI Divemaster course or PADI IDC with Asia Scuba Instructors you will have access to many more materials in our ‘online classroom’.

After studying the theory, you can test yourself using our IDC Practice exams. The exams contain similar questions (but obviously not the same!) as the PADI Instructor Exam questions and PADI Divemaster Exam questions.

PADI IDC Theory and Standards exam on the IE

On the PADI Instructor Exam (IE) you will be tested on PADI Dive Theory and PADI Standards and Procedures.

The PADI Dive Theory Exam contains 5 sections;  Physics, Physiology, Equipment, Skills and Environment, and Decompression Theory and RDP. Each section has 12 multiple choice questions.

You’ll have 1,5 hour to complete the Dive Theory Exam. You will be allowed a time extension if you have learning difficulties (documented by a physician) or if the exam is not available in the language that you speak.

Passing score is 75% so you are allowed to have maximum 3 misstakes in each section. If you score less then 75% on 1 section then you are allowed to do a make-up on this section (again 12 questions). If you score less then 75% on 2 or more sections you can not be certified as a PADI Instructor on this IE. On a next IE you can have another go at the exam but you’ll have to do both the PADI Dive Theory exam and the PADI Standards and Procedures exam again.

The PADI Standards and Procedures exam contains 50 multiple choice questions. Again you’ll have 1,5 hour and a time extension if needed. The passing score is again 75%. This exam is ‘open book’ meaning that you are allowed to use the PADI Instructor Manual and the PADI ‘Guide to Teaching’. This means however, that there is no make-up allowed. Scoring less then 75% on the PADI Standards and Procedures exam will lead to non-certification at this IE.
