Compass navigation is one of those skills that that makes divers feel truly independent and empowered underwater. As a scuba instructor, teaching compass navigation can be incredibly rewarding, as it helps students find their way around the underwater world without relying on others or visible landmarks. Once they master it, divers feel a powerful sense of accomplishment and control.
Teaching this skill
Start by breaking down the compass and its features in a way that’s easy and memorable. Show students how the bezel rotates, how to set the marker on the north arrow, and how to hold the compass steady while swimming. For some laughs, have them practice on land with a towel over their heads! This not only makes for a fun exercise but gets them comfortable with relying solely on the compass.
Remember that you may be teaching in clear tropical waters but students may want to dive in places where conditions aren’t ideal. On some local sites with lower visibility, the compass becomes a diver’s best friend.
Common mistakes in compass navigation include setting the marker on the lubber line, instead of the north arrow, holding the compass at an angle or forgetting about buoyancy control. Encourage your students to swim at a relaxed pace.
During the PADI IDC you will not only learn how to teach this skill, but also how to organise this underwater exercise. It’s important to plan ahead, in particular when working with a large group of students. Imagine you’re swimming with a student who makes a wrong turn, leaving both of you lost in navigation land. That could become a bit messy.
The reward
As a diving instructor, seeing your student succeed in compass navigation is pure satisfaction. Not only does it mean they’re becoming more self-reliant, it also opens up diving in new environments, even in limited visibility
Giving them a ‘high five” when they reach their designated points accurately is a rewarding experience, and they’ll appreciate the confidence and freedom they gain from mastering this skill.
