You can teach this! Disconnect LPI hose

Disconnecting the low-pressure inflator hose from the BCD is typically a skill that is completely new to students. Most have no idea that a sticking inflator could be a problem and they certainly wouldn’t know how to solve it during a dive.

As an diving instructor, teaching this skill, even though it’s easy, is incredibly rewarding because you’re helping students gain true independence and confidence in managing equipment problems.

Teaching this skill

During the IDC you will learn different techniques to disconnect the LPI hose and how to teach this to your student divers.

Start by explaining why this skill is so important, showing them how to locate the connection between the BCD and inflator hose. Emphasize that staying calm and acting with control is key. Demonstrate how to grip the hose, while pressing the release button, and firmly disconnect it with a smooth “push and pull”.

Students might struggle at first, finding the right grip or using enough force to release the hose. Encourage them to take a deep breath, stay calm, and try again.

The key of course, is to release the pressure on the quick release ring. Then only very little force is needed to push the connector off.  Practicing on the surface first allows you to help and explain your students how to perform the skill. Then, repeating the skill underwater will give them the confidence that they can quickly do this on a dive if needed.

The reward

The fun part of this skill is that it is actually quite easy, if you know how to do it. Seeing students struggle at first and the enjoying that “Aha!” moment when they get it is guaranteed to put a smile on your face. You’ll see their confidence rise when they realize they can handle this issue on their own, and that is one of the most rewarding parts of being a diving instructor.

This skill makes them feel safer, and more self-assured, bringing them one step closer to becoming skilled, confident divers.
